This chart represents the cumulative number of cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) globally that are reported daily by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The sharp rise in new cases observed on February 17, 2020 (day 28) is due to China's sudden broadening of its COVID-19 case detection criteria. On day 28, China reported laboratory confirmed cases as before, but additionally, China began to report new cases based solely on clinical diagnosis. And most of the clinically diagnosed cases that were included on day 28, had been diagnosed in the days and weeks prior to day 28. This accounts for the sudden large increase in new cases on day 28. We will move the clinically diagnosed cases that were reported on day 28, to the actual days they were diagnosed, when the WHO publishes results of an investigation that is now being conducted by the WHO and China's National Health Commission (CNHC).
